The Ohioans’ Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (OPAI) Survey was conducted by CHRR at The Ohio State University using the American Population Panel (APP). A total of 501 U.S. adults completed the survey in 2025. The study was designed to assess how Americans define artificial intelligence, the extent to which they interact with AI technologies in their daily lives, and the degree to which they trust AI systems across a variety of social contexts. Survey topics include:
- Self-assessed knowledge and understanding of artificial intelligence.
- Personal exposure to and use of AI-powered tools and services.
- Public definitions and conceptualizations of AI.
- Trust in AI systems used in healthcare, finance, education, public safety, and workplace settings.
- Perceived risks, benefits, and harms associated with AI technologies.
- Attitudes toward transparency, labeling, accountability, and responsible AI development.
- Opinions regarding government regulation, industry oversight, and legal responsibility for AI-related harms.
- Concerns about misinformation, deepfakes, bias, employment disruption, privacy, and broader societal consequences.
- Views regarding the long-term future of AI and its potential impact on humanity.
- Open-ended responses describing personal experiences and reflections on AI technology.
- Demographic characteristics including age, education, gender, race and ethnicity, political orientation, veteran status, and geography.
The survey included both closed-ended and open-ended questions, creating opportunities for quantitative and qualitative analyses of contemporary public opinion regarding artificial intelligence. The dataset is suitable for researchers interested in technology adoption, public trust, governance and regulation, political attitudes, digital literacy, science communication, and the social impacts of emerging technologies.
